The String of Bananas (Curio radicans, formerly Senecio radicans) is a fast-growing, trailing succulent native to South Africa, renowned for its glossy, curved leaves that resemble tiny bananas. It is a popular, low-maintenance houseplant ideal for hanging baskets due to its long, cascading stems.

Key Characteristics:

  • Leaves: Succulent, 2-3 cm long, tapering curved cylinder shape (banana-like) with translucent, window-like lines on the sides for sunlight penetration.
  • Growth Habit: Prostrate, mat-forming stems (15–30 cm long, often longer in cultivation).
  • Flowers: Produces small, cinnamon-scented white or light-yellow flowers in late winter or early spring.
  • Color: Typically glossy green, but can turn reddish-purple when exposed to high sunlight.

Care and Cultivation:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate partial direct sun.
  • Watering: Highly drought-tolerant; water only when the soil is completely dry to prevent root rot.
  • Soil: Requires well-drained, porous, and sandy soil (cactus or succulent mix).
  • Toxicity: Considered toxic to pets (cats/dogs) and humans if ingested, causing symptoms like nausea and lethargy.

This plant is often confused with String of Pearls, but the String of Bananas grows faster and has leaves that are much more elongated.
